Sultanate History
As written before this, before Kuala Selangor had a sultan, it was lead by Upu Chendera Burung. This story is different if related to Selangor as a whole. If based on the first sultanate, nobody can deny that Raja Lumu given the title Sultan Salahuddin was the first Yang DiPertuan Kuala Selangor (Selangor).
Although some people said that Raja Lumu isn't the first sultan because when he came to Selangor there was someone who reign over it. The statement even claimed that Klang was earliest in having a leader, Datuk Engku Klang.
Datuk Engku Klang came from Negeri Sembilan, the son of Sultan Johor. In the same description, it was explained that Kuala Selangor was governed by Datuk Penggawa, Langat Datuk Aru, Ulu Langat lead by Datuk Engku Kelang and Klang was administrated by En Chik Yang Tujuh.
From the statement it is clear that the leadership of Datuk Engku Klang didn't consist of Kuala Selangor, as he was only had power only along the Klang river.

Early Sultanate
Selangor early sultanate started in Kuala Selangor because the affects of it is still apparent in Kuala Selangor. End of 17th century in Kuala Selangor had a Yam Tuan which is a king from the state of Gua Tanah Bugis named Arang Pasarai and his child married Daeng Perani, one of the 5 children of a Bugis king and soon after they got princess Berima. Daeng Perani with the help of his comrades went to help Sultan Kedah over power struggle. In the battle Daeng Perani was shot dead. Another from the Bugis king is Daeng Chelak who married Tengku Mandak daughter of Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Syah ( 1722-1760) Johor. When Daeng Chelak stationed in Riau as 11th Yam Tuan Muda Riau in 1730's, a Bugis named Daeng Mateko made nice with Raja Siak and disrupted the peace of Selangor. This made Daeng Chelak came to Kuala Selangor with his battle force from Riau. Daeng Mateko was defeated and he ran to Siak.Ever since then, Daeng Chelak always goes back and forth from Riau to Kuala Selangor. He then married Daeng Masik Arang Pala and was brought to Riau. In 1742 Daeng Chelak came to Kuala Selangor with Bugis people to attack Perak and then went to Selangor. During this time an entourage of his people came to Riau calling Daeng Chelak to go back to Riau and he died in 1745. When Daeng Chelak was in Kuala Selangor the residents of Kuala Selangor begged him to stayed. However Daeng Chelak had name one of his sons which was Raja Lumu to come to Kuala Selangor. Other opinions was that, in 1743 Raja Lumu sailed to Riau to find a state north of Malacca. Also in the entourage, was Daeng Loklok and a few of his followers. The entourage stopped by Angsa Island to find a drinking source . But there wasn't any freshwater there to drink so then went along Selangor River. They came to a cock fighting ring and sat down. Raja Lumu's arrival was warmly accepted by the locals because he was of Bugis descent,as their curse goes. The urge to fing a freswater drinking source was out of Raja Lumu's head when the locals asked him to become their leader. This was agreed by Raja Lumu. To fullfil Raja Lumu's wish, a freshwater pond at the foot of the hills was shown to him. Raja Lumu's confession was the start of the early sultanate in Kuala Selangor. Raja Lumu was appointed as the first Yang DiPertuan Selangor, Daeng Loklok was appointed as Datuk Maharaja Lela. The news that Raja Lumu son of Daeng Chelak from Bugis becoming Yang DiPertuan Selangor came to Sultan Muzaffar Syah in Perak, who was at that time staying in Beruas. Sultan Muzaffar Syah send a messenger to welcome Raja Lumu to come to Kuala Bernam to meet your highness. The arrival of Raja Lumu was celebrated with a huge royal ceremonial with the drum of the disambut nobat and whistle of the nefiri. This was actually to test whether Raja Lumu, is truly of royals ancestrial. After all the challenge didn't brought any harm to Raja Lumu, Sultan Muzaffar Syah confirmed the appoinment. After that he was appointed and was called Sultan Salehuddin Syah, while Daeng Loklok was called Datuk Maharaja Lela Husin.
The historical installation was done in Pangkor Island during 1756. After the installation was over, Sultan Salehuddin Syah went back to Kuala Selangor. The first Sultan Selangor stayed on top of Selangor Hill that is known as Malawati Hill. According to Tuffatul al Nafis written by Almarhum Raja Ali Al Haji, Riau, there when Tengku Raja Selangor (Raja Lumu) was playing in Pangkor Island, Raja Lumu was invited by Yang DiPertuan Perak to see him. From the negotiation between both sides,it was agreed that Tengku Raja Selangor became Yang DiPertuan Besar Selangor called Sultan Salehuddin. Then Sultan Salehuddin went home to Kuala Selangor with Yang Dipertuan Besar Perak walking him out. In Kuala Selangor Sultan Salehuddin was crowned in front of the people of Selangor with a ceremonial. Ever since then both become good friends and kept in touch. Unfortunately it wasn't mentioned in the book who is Yang DiPertuan Perak during that time but seeing that the name of the appointed Yang DiPertuan Selangor is Sultan Salehuddin who reigned from 1756 to 1778.
But Malay History was written by Buyong Adil in The Malay School Series 1952 stated Sultan Selangor reigned from 1743-1770. At that time your highness went to Perak and appointed as Sultan Perak with the title Sultan Salehuddin. In a Selangor souvenir 1939 book it was written in jawi that Sultan Selangor,Sultan Salehuddin reign in1743. However if it is true that Raja Lumu was appointed, it is clear that your higness crowning was during 1743-1756. The date shows that Yang DiPertuan Perak at that time,Raja Inu was known as Sultan Muzaffar Shah 111 reigned from 1728-1756. According to the book Misa Melayu written by Raja Chulan bin Raja Ab. Hamid, when Perak was under Sultan Mahmud Syah, Raja Selangor came to Perak. During this time Raja Selangor crowned and was given the title Sultan Salehuddin with the ruler's seal. Statement from the Misa Melayu book is different than other opinions but it might have a little similarity with the book written by Barbara Watson Andaya, Perak titled The Abode of Grace, published by Oxford University Press 1979. This book stated that Raja Kimas or Sultan Mahmud Syah Perak promulgate Raja Lumu as Selangor's free ruler. This statement means that the promulgation as a free ruler is done by Sultan Mahmud, in order to strenghten Raja Lumu Selangor's position. It could be that the promulgation of the crowning was done in order to free Raja Lumu from the grip of Johor and Riau at that time. This statement could be true because of the date mentioned above, Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Syah Johor and Riau were exchanging letters to Raja Lumu, he used the title Sultan Salehuddin. Johor history also state that on 30th January, 1756, Sultan Sulaiman (Johor) came to Riau. In that year it was also stated that the start of titled Selangor ruler which is Sultan Salehuddin the brother of Raja Haji, the prince Daeng Chelak Yamtuan Muda Riau Second.
From all the statements it is clear that Raja Lumu was given the title by Sultan Muzaffar Syah 111 Perak before 1756. After the homecoming of Sultan Salehuddin Selangor after being Yang DiPertuan Selangor there was a few differences: According to Tuhfakul al Nafis his homecoming was followed by Yang DiPertuan Perak. In the book Misa Melayu said that after Raja Lumu was given the title Sultan Salehuddin, he went to Raja Haji who was in battle in Kedah. Same goes in 'Malay Atmosphere History V' states that, Raja Lumu Selangor came to Perak and asked for a title from Yang DiPertuan Perak, but it wasn't mention who followed him to Selangor. According to other opinion orally,if we analyze Raja Lumu's personality, before he became your highness,he married one the Perak princess. If this is true,it is certain that there is truth in Yang Dipertuan perak followed him back to Selangor. Furthermore,Raja Lumu in Perak only received a title, but his installation was in Kuala Selangor, in front of Selangor's residents. There'sa possibility that Yang DiPertuan Perak was involved in the ceremony.
Kuala Selangor Under The Dutch Administration Belanda stayed in both towns of Kuala Selangor from 2nd. August, 1784 until 28th. June, 1785. According to stories,Dutch was defeated in one night . Tuhfat al Nafis mentioned Yamtuan Muhammad Ali helped Dutch attacked Kuala Selangor, and then seizing the assets of the people and bringing them back to Siak. Syed Ali called himself Yang DiPertuan Selangor, lived on top of Bukit Kota which is Sultan Ibrahim's palace. From then on Syed Ali became Yang DiPertuan Selangor in the Dutch administration. Selangor history mentioned that after Dutch took over Kuala Selangor they choose Raja Muhammad Ali as the deputy Yang DiPertuan Selangor helped by Syed Ali. Raja Muhammad Ali wasn't long in Selangor with Syed Ali replacing him but it wasn't acknowledge by the VIP's of Selangor. While in Sejarah Alam Melayu said that on the 2nd. August, 1784, Dutch took over Kuala Selangor. Sultan Ibrahim went to Bernam while the Dutch in Kuala Selangor elected Raja Muhammad Ali , son of Raja Alam and grandchild of Raja Kecil Siak to be Sultan Selangor. Not long after that,Raja Muhammad Ali left from Kuala Selangor. The book didn't mention when Raja Muhammad Ali left Kuala Selangor his place was taken over by Syed Ali, which is in the statement before. Dutch failed in persuading the people of Kuala Selangor although they promised to give massive pardon so that they can return to their respective houses. The VIP's refuses to acknowledge the crowned sultan by the Dutch as the Yang DiPertuan Selangor. The people didn't trade tin with the Dutch, until the rightful king was crowned . Other traders was frozen temporarily while Syed Ali spend his time robbing and terrorizing the district. Dutch crowned Raja Muhammad Ali as the deputy Yang DiPertuan Selangor to pay his deeds in helping them fight Riau, Johor and Selangor. Among the three Sultan Selangor that resides in Kuala Selangor, Sultan Ibrahim reigned the longest. His highness was a very hardworking sultan in the eyes of the people .
SULTAN MOHAMMAD (1778 - 1836) As a replacement for Sultan Ibrahim crowned Raja Muhammad which is Raja Muda. Although his highness wasn't the first wife's son to be crowned as the Sultan Muhammad resides in Kuala Selangor too.
His highness weak administration resulted in Kuala Selangor becoming the hub of robbers. The prove is the massive killings of Malays by the Chinese in Lukut wasn't taken any action, when in fact his highness owes a lot to the traders in Malacca. This debt made the traders in Malacca wanting to kidnapped your highness . Luck was on his side when, Raja Juma'at's son in law promised to settle his debts. His highness weakness made a member of the Selangor Royal family, named Raja Busu opened Lukut because of it's tin but didn't pay Sultan Muhammad. His weakness also created a civil war in Selangor. His highness also likes to give a particular piece of land to his son in laws and not to his own sons . Kuala Lumpur was to be handed over to Raja Abdullah, Klang at first wanted to be given to his son, Raja Sulaiman, but when something happened in Klang he gave it to his son in law. Meanwhile Lukut was handed over to his son in law Raja Juma'at . His attitude in giving Selangor's power from son to son in law raised civil war between Raja Mahadi (nephew) to go against him. The power to administer the state of Selangor was also given to Raja Ab. Samad husband of Tengku Atfah, also raised civil war. The power of son in law is wide and raise the anger of the people, when the administration of Selangor was given to Sultan Ab. Samad to his son in law Tengku Kudin. All of this civil wars in a way involved Kuala Selangor. From one battle to another made Selangor become chaotic. When his highness died, the country was unstable due to his administration. His highness was buried at the same place on top of Selangor Hill. With the passing of Muhammad, Sultan Selangor didn't reside in Jugra. The move happened because of conflict between the VIP's in Kuala Selangor about the replacement of the sultan. The battle between Raja Muhammad, prince of Sultan Muhammad with Tengku Ampuan basik who was still young being crowned as Raja Muda and deputy Raja Juma'at (Lukut) continued to a civil war . All three graves still exist until today and kept well on Selangor hill with the other graves. After the Selangor administration moved to Jugra, in Kuala Selangor there was only one representative of the sultan to collect taxes in Selangor river which is Raja Musa, prince of Sultan Ab. Samad. When the sultan representative was exterminated, Kuala Selangor was left under the leadership of Yang Dihormati Datuk Penggawa Paduka Mahabijaya Permatang and Kuala Selangor, which is one of the bigwigs in Selangor.

From other sources
In Klang at that time there was 4 datuk with the same position which is Datuk Engku , Datuk Aru, Datuk Penggawa and Datuk Kecil Yang Tujuh (Anak Encik Kuning) who named himself Orang Kaya(Rich Person) Klang after getting the approval fron Datuk Engku,as the main leader at that time . Because all 4 of them has the same responsibility, they came to the consensus to invite a king as the patron. Because of these reasons,Raja Lumu was specially invited to come to Selangor to be the first Yang DiPertuan in Bukit Selangor with the agreement of his father, Daeng Chelak. This statement was followed by one other that said before Raja Lumu came, Selangor had a leader or an orang besar called Datuk Engku Pinang Tunggal. His grave is still in Sungai Way, Selangor. Datuk Engku Klang and 5 siblings came from Johor, got an instruction from their father,Bendahara Sekudai to come to Selangor. 4 of his brothers are Datuk Kelana, Datuk Jelebu, Datuk Johol and Datuk rembau. All of them resides in Negeri Sembilan.
After four generations from Datuk Engku which is the time of Datuk Engku's Menghulur dragon, during this time the people wanted a king that can protect them. Because during that time Selangor was under the Bugis influence, the king had to take someone from the Bugis tribe in Selangor. The pick fall on a Bugis named Harun pasarai in the year 1700 being appointed by Datuk Engku Klang and given the official seal. He died in 1723, and was replaced by his younger brother named Raja Siti, who resides in Klang. Raja Siti died in 1743, and didn't leave any heir. This is what made Raja Lumu was asked to become Yang DiPertuan Selangor, in Kuala Selangor. From the statement above,we come to the conclusion that before Raja Lumu became Yang DiPertuan, Selangor (Klang) there had been a leader, but his power didn't involved Kuala Selangor. This story kinds of contradict with what was wrote by R.O Wenstedt on Negeri Sembilan JMBRSS Vol X11, pt 3 1935, mentioned that Raja Lumu wasn't accepted by Datuk Engku Klang as Yang DiPertuan Selangor except after Raja Lumu was crowned as Sultan Perak. According to the Cenderamata Selangor Souvenir Book, around the year 1643, Raja Lumu (Lumun) prince of Daeng Chelak Raja Bugis came to Selangor and become First Sultan Selangor titled Sultan Salehuddin Syah. |
Reigning Sultans of Selangor in Kuala Selangor
SULTAN SALEHUDDIN (1756 - 1778) History books on Selangor mentioned that Raja Lumu has a younger brother named Raja Haji who was deemed as the strongest Bugis Commander at that time, especially opposing against the Dutch. But there was an oral opinion saying that Raja Lumu has 2 siblings,Raja Haji and a girl named Raja (Daeng) Hafsah, who married Daeng Lakani, and made a place in Api-api. From this oldest family came Yang DiPertua Selangor titled Sultan Salehuddin Syah residingg on top of Bukit Selangor. His highness was on top of the government from 1743 (1756) until 1778. When he died he was buried on the hill and was named Marhum Salleh. He also appointed a Bugis named Daeng Loklok called Datuk Maharaja Lela Husin. One of his daughters named Cik Long Halijah married to Raja Ibrahim, prince of Raja Lumu and also the second Sultan Selangor. Under the reign of Sultan Salehuddin Selangor involved in the war against Dutch which was helped by Tun Dalam Raja Kecil Yang DiPertuan Trengganu. It was during this time that Selangor war with Kedah. The involvement of Sultan Salehuddin in the war helped his brother Raja Haji in bringing Dutch directing their opinion and ambition to take over Selangor (Kuala Selangor). The death of Sultan salehuddin left 4 prince which is Raja Ibrahim, Raja Nala, Raja Idris and Raja Ja'afar. SULTAN IBRAHIM (1778 - 1826) Raja Ibrahim the eldest prince of Sultan Salehuddin was crowned as the second Sultan Selangor, his brother Raja Nala wa crowned Raja Muda and 2 others become the Important Person in Selangor. Sultan Ibrahim was considered as a Sultan that is brave and strong with having knowledge because of his upbringing since a child. He always follow his father to trips such as to Riau, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Kedah. War spats and small wars always happen between Bugis people with the Dutch people since 1740's . The fire keep on burning after 14th January, 1784. The war resulted the death of Raja Haji by the Dutch , afterwards he was burried in Teluk Ketapang and called Marhum Ketapang. The death of Raja Haji ignited the anger of Sultan Ibrahim causing Selangor indirectly being involved in the dispute between the Dutch and Johor. As a safety precautio from the attack of the Dutch against Selangor,Sultan Ibrahim build two forts. The fort on top of Bukit Selangor and the land fort on Bukit Tanjung.
The prediction was accurate, beacuse on 2nd August, 1784, Dutch attacked and took over both forts. Sultan Ibrahim and his people ran to Ulu Selangor, then to Pahang to meet Bendehara Ab. Majid asking for help.In Pahang Sultan Ibrahim manage to marry Tun Selamah, son of Bendahara Ab. Majid. While the Dutch was in Kuala Selangor they fixed the stone fort on Bukit Selangor. It was given the name Altings burg Fort in conjunction with Dutch Governor General at that time . So was the land fort in Bukit Tanjung was named Utrecht Fort which is the name of the ship of Jacob Pieter van Braam, then the fort was called Dutch Fort by the Malays. During that time the Dutch appointed Raja Muhammad Ali to hold the Sultan Selangor position with the help of his nephew, Syed Ali. Both are from Siak. Sultan Ibrahim retreated to Pahang didn't mean that he will always be defeated, plus his highness rearranged the army and reorganized all equipment while having a determination and keeping his spirits up. Focusing in achieving his goals, on 27th of June, 1785, Sultan Ibrahim's entourage manage to banish Dutch from staying in Kuala Selangor. After Kuala Selangor was administered by Sultan Ibrahim his highness tried to calm Selangor by making them sign 2 treaty with the Dutch which is on the 29th of July, 1786 and 29th July, 1790. Then by making peace with the English Company in Penang Island by making the business treaty on the 23rd August, 1818. During the reigning time of his highness Raja Hasan was sent to Kuala Bidor as tin ore tax collector as a sign that the province was under Selangor. Then on 11th of July, 1823, sultan signed a contract with Perak on tin ore. During that time Siam was adamant in taking over Selangor. From that the Burnai Contract was created on the 20th of June, 1826. Finally on the 27th of October, 1826 Sultan Ibrahim died and was buried on Bukit Selangor. Almarhum left seven prince and a few princess. They were Raja Muhammad, Raja Hasan, Husain, Ahmad, Abdullah, Said and Raja Ismail. |
Important Person of Kuala Selangor This position started in the year 1785 when Selangor was under the reign of Sultan Ibrahim. The first person was unknown but it was apparent that the position was continued until the reign of Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Syah that resides in Klang. On the 20th of October, 1898, Sultan Sulaiman appointed an Important Person in Penggawa Permatang which is : - Datuk Haji Ahmad bin Baba, called Datuk Penggawa Tua Permatang Paduka Mahabijaya.
- Datuk Haji Mohd. Shah, given the title in 1916.
- Datuk Ismail bin Mohd. Shah, given the title on 13th May, 1948.
- Datuk Hj. Ibrahim bin Datuk Ismail, given the title on 13th May, 1958 called Paduka Mahabijaya Permatang dan Kuala Selangor. Still working.
According to some opinion, back then in Jeram there was a leader named Datuk Mafak who was said to be shot to death with a golden bullet and was replaced with his younger brother named Datuk Sulaiman. From this descendant was the one called as Penggawa Permatang by Sultan Sulaiman . Because Permatang is a royal Selangor village, that is why the important person's asked to live there or to be called Penggawa Permatang.
